ANTRIM — The group trying to put a cell tower in Stoddard has applied with the local planning board to put another tower on Smith Road in Antrim.
New Cingular Wireless and AT&T Mobility Corp. have applied for a special exception for the installation, operation and maintenance of a personal wireless service facility, or a cell tower, in a rural district.
The Smith Road property is owned by Ernest and Rose Litchfield.
There will be a public hearing on the application Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Antrim Town Hall. Written concerns may be submitted to the Antrim town office before the meeting.
The application is available at the town offices.
AT&T is also working to install a cell tower in Stoddard, though that application is on hold because of a lawsuit.
The zoning board there approved a 130-foot tower on Melville Hill overlooking Granite Lake in May, but agreed in July to rehear the case at residents’ request.
A day later, three of the five board members and all of the alternates resigned, leaving the board without the quorum needed to reconsider.
In August, AT&T filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Concord asking the court to allow construction of the tower under the terms the board approved in May, claiming the resignation-induced delays constitute a “failure to act,” and that the board had exceeded the time limit set by federal law to consider the proposal.
Both sides are now waiting on a judgment in the case.
